A registration is a requirement for unarmed security guards in Virginia. There are several requirements to be met before a security guard license will be issued.

As per the Virginia state regulation, an unarmed security officer/courier means, any person who performs the functions of observation, detection, reporting, or notification of appropriate authorities or designated agents regarding persons or property on the premises that individual is contracted to protect, and who does not carry or have access to a firearm in the performance of their duties.

The minimum eligibility requirement for an unarmed Security Guard in the state of Virginia include:

  1. Be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  2. Successful completion of all initial training requirements for each registration category.
  3. Be a United States citizen or legal resident alien of the United States.

Initial Registration for an Unarmed Security Guard in Virginia

The requirements can be found in 6 VAC 20-171-120 of the Regulations. Registrations are issued for 24 months.
