Security Guards and Crowd Control
Security Guards and Crowd Control

Security Officer Interview Question: You are hired to lead the security for an event where 250 people are attending.
How many Security Guards you would like to enlist as part of your team and why?

This again is another trick question. You shouldn’t answer this question with a perfect number, without gathering a lot more information about this event.

The way you analyze the problem is more important and that will indicate your depth of experience and involvement in the security industry.

The following will be a good approach to answer this type of question.

There is no single “standard” for Security Guard crowd ratio purely based on the number of people attending.

A single number without considering the nature of the people attending and the nature of the event would not make much sense because crowds and events are very different in terms of their potential for disorder.

The number of Security Guards needed will depend on the nature and the type of the function.

For example, 250 people at a company picnic will be a lot different than a local band concert at a private venue. And both of this will be different compared to a strike and picketing event organized by a disgruntled labor union.

In the first scenario, a few Security Guards can secure the premises and manage the crowd. In the second scenario more preparation and more Security Guards are needed.

In the last scenario, in addition to the Guards, proper police presence will be essential to avoid the situation from getting ugly.
